Katarzyna (Kasia) Arczewska from the Nilsen group was awarded a prize for her poster presentation at the 10th International Conference on Environmental Mutagens (ICEM). The conference was entitled 'The Renaissance of Environmental Mutagenesis' and was held in Firenze, Italy, on the 20th to the 25th of August.
Kasia’s poster was entitled:
Identification and characterization of MutT family enzymes in Caenorhabditis elegans.
640 posters were presented at this conference and six prizes were awarded. Kasias prize was awarded by the Mutagenesis and Oxford University Press.
The other authors of the poster were: Christian Baumeier, Tanima SenGupta, Torbjørn Rognes, Jaroslaw T. Kuzmierek and Hilde Nilsen. The poster can be viewed on the 5th floor of the Biotechnology Centre.
BiO has launched a new web site. We hope you will find the information you seek and get an impression of the research activities at the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo. We will present events and publications and keep you updated on news concerning BiO. Our web site is in English. This mirrors our centre. We have 13 nationalities represented in our staff. BiO has always recruited internationally. One page on the site will be in Norwegian. Some of the news and information from our English pages will be summarized and there will be room for reports interesting to mainly Norwegian readers. If you have questions or comments about our website, your contact person is

Genome Technology appoints Oslo as one of the 20 best places for biotech in the world. The Biotechnology Centre of Oslo (BiO) is mentioned along with Oslo Cancer Cluster and Norwegian Center for Stem Cell Based Tumor Therapy. Oslo is the only European region on the list, and the only one outside the US apart from India and China. Genome Technology's list highlights 11 established and nine emerging biotech regions, Oslo is among the latter. The reason for choosing Oslo is said to be that for its size, the efforts to cement a bioscience segment here in Norway are impressive. This is important for the biotechnology sector in Oslo, says the head of BiO, professor Kjetil Taskén. A great amount of work has been put into the building of this regional biotechnological segment and the Oslo Cancer Cluster has achieved an impressive profile comprising much of the activity in the Oslo region.
A new research center for molecular medicine, the Center for Molecular Medicine Norway, will be located at the Oslo Innovation Center (Forskningsparken). The new Center is part of a Nordic partnership with EMBL in the field of molecular medicine. The two other partners are the Institute for Molecular Medicine in Helsinki and the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine in Umeå.
The Administrative director of EMBL, Ian Mattaj, is the leader of the Nordic steering committee. He says that each of the three partners has a long history of research on specific areas that are relevant to molecular medicine and that every partner contributes with a unique combination of competence, techniques and equipment.
